"Technical Notes"
We shot using a Sony CineAlta 900R HDCAM with Zeiss prime lenses using Technik Pro adapter. I wanted to avoid the look of the current cinema in favor of a retro look to contrast the slightly futuristic theme. DP Atsushi Yoneyama (who has won number of cinematograpy awards in Japan) and I were not afraid of going a little over-the-top with strong diffusion, tobacco filters, day-for-night, etc.

"Locations"
Although the film takes place in the near future, I wanted to go for a timeless look. I used the house owned by my in-laws (big thanks!) furnished with mid-century furniture. The location was perfect since the house is surrounded by woods and was conveniently near a huge, eerie-looking tree. The location also provided a view of the Catskill Mountains and Harlem Valley, as well as beautiful sunsets. We shot the forest sequences at "Wing's Castle" in Milbrook, NY. Built by a Vietnam veteran and his wife, who had no previous architectural experience, the castle's oddly beautiful, eclectic design lends an innocent, dream-like quality to the scenes shot there.

"Special Makeup"
It was important to show the severity of the illness that the boy had, so I asked special makeup artist Jeremy Selenfriend, who specializes in trauma make-up, to create a surgery scars that showed he had number of operations. Making healthy 11-year old boy look fatigued was achived by Hi-Def makeup artist Jennifar Snowdon.

"Japanese Connection"
Because I work primarily on Japanese productions, the crew consisted mostly of Japanese, but also of Korean, Mexican, Puerto Rican, French and American crew members, all of whom I have worked with on a number of projects. They donated their time, equipment and resources, without which I would never have been able to make this film.

"Women Behind the Camera"
5 of the key members are women: Writer/Director (Shinako Sudo), all 3 produers: Haruka Hiroishi, Rie Koko and Sudo, associate producer (Mizuho Endo) and key hair/make-up (Jennifer Snowdon).
